Find the Wey and Arun Canal in Sidney Wood, Alfold

Hidden in Sidney Woods is a stretch of the Wey and Arun canal. Now disused, this stretch of the canal has been reclaimed by nature, which makes for an interesting walk.
The Wey and Arun Canal
The Wey and Arun Canal opened in 1816 to link the River Wey and the south coast, creating a route from London to Portsmouth. It closed in 1871 after railways became popular.

Parts of the canal are navigable but the stretch in Sidney Woods has been reclaimed by nature and dries out in summer months.
For further details, please see the Wey and Arun Canal website.

Finding the Canal
The canal is about a twenty to thirty minute walk from the car park.
The easiest way to find the canal is to follow the footpath out of the car park (walking away from the main road) and then turn right when you meet the main path.

Follow this until it bends hard to the left. Then choose a path that goes into the woods on your right and you will find the canal.

Finding the Sidney Wood Car Park
There was no sign for the car park when we visited so be sure to check a map before you go.
