Newlands Corner is one of the most spectacular picnic spots we have visited. The views are simply breathtaking. This is also the spot chosen by Agatha Christie for her staged disappearance in 1926.
The Walks There are different pathways you can take – across the downs, to Silent Pool – a shady pond with an alluring, blue hue and a slightly eerie feel. Folklore suggests that a local girl drowned in this pond whilst trying to escape the advances of King John and haunts it to this day. Orienteering There is a permanent orienteering course at Newlands Corner, which you can download for free from British Orienteering website. The Paths We decided to walk down the hill along a chalk path. We had no problems with an all terrain buggy but there were some steep hills. Driving to Silent Pool We drove from Newlands Corner to Silent Pool, which took less than five minutes. I understand it is about a 2 mile walk.
