The River Blackwater rises in Aldershot and flows to the River Loddon in Swallowfield, near Reading.

The Blackwater Valley Path follows the river on its journey through nature reserves, meadows, industrial areas and woodland.  It is 23 miles long and divided into 12 sections. 

 

 

Begin at the Beginning 

Section 1:  Rowhill Nature Reserve to Pea Bridge

Source of the River Blackwater at Rowhill Nature Reserve in Aldershot, Hampshire

Section 1 of the Blackwater Valley Path starts in the tranquil Rowhill Nature Reserve and winds along the River Blackwater, past the river’s source, beside waterfalls, over bridges and out onto the streets of Aldershot and Badshot Lea.

Find a Five Leaf Clover 

Section 2:  Pea Bridge to Shawfields

Along the River Blackwater are clover patches where you can find four leaf clovers. We have even found a five leaf clover here. These are very rare so be sure to only give one to someone you love very much!

Discover a Canal in the Sky 

Section 3:  Shawfields to Hollybush Pits

Ash Aqueduct, Basingstoke Canal and the Blackwater Valley Path Section 3 Shawfields to Hollybush Pits

Stumbling across a canal flowing over a road bridge is one of the biggest surprises I have had on a local walk! The Ash Aqueduct and three play areas all wait along Section 3 of the Blackwater Valley Path.

Cycle Along the River 

Section 4:  Hollybush Pits to Coleford Bridge

Blackwater Valley Path Section 4 Hollybush Pits to Colefield Bridge

Section 4 of the Blackwater Valley Path follows the river’s route along the busy A331 dual carriageway.  Unfortunately, you tend to be more aware of the road than the river. Nevertheless, it is a largely traffic free cycle route that we enjoy using.

Meet Nymphs and a Boggart

Section 6:  M3 Bridge to Blackwater Park

River Blackwater at Hawley Meadows, Camberley, Surrey and Blackwater Valley Path Section 6 M3 Bridge to Blackwater Park

A cheeky boggart and some wood and water nymphs are just some of the creatures waiting to meet you along Section 6 of the Blackwater Valley Path.  You may also spot fish, butterflies and herons!

When you’re in the mood for a bit of natural drama, consider the Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, a part of Hampshire that has been referred to as “Little Switzerland”.

With steep climbs and sharp drops, most walks are sure to be a challenge with magnificent views as the reward.

The mesmerizing Mill Lane Waterfall roars down a hill and under the road where it pools as the slow flowing Ashford Stream. You can walk to the waterfall from Steep Recreation Ground. If you are feeling intrepid, you can keep walking to Shoulder of Mutton Hill in the Ashford Hangers.

Paddle in Ashford Stream

There is a magical patch of wild at the foot of Lutcombe Bottom that is easier to access than the rest of the Ashford Hangers. This area has a shallow stream, a clear pond and fern lined paths that twist and turn through the trees.
