Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, DeepcutThe stretch of the Basingstoke Canal tow path from Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge in Deepcut, is a picturesque two miles that takes you past 11 of the 14 locks in the Deepcut Flight.

The Deepcut Flight

Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, DeepcutThe Deepcut Flight is a series of 14 locks on the Basingstoke Canal between Pirbright and Surrey Heath.

In total these locks raise boats by nearly 100 feet!

The Locks

Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, DeepcutThe locks have two enormous wooden doors at each end with huge levers.

It must have been quite an engineering feat to build these 200 years ago and then to restore these in the 1970s and 80s.

The Bisley Bullet

Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, DeepcutAlong the way are tell-tale signs of the Bisley Bullet, a railway line that connected Brookwood to nearby rifle ranges. This line was closed in the 1950s, leaving only its brick piers.

Cowshott Bridge

Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, DeepcutThe path passes past Cowshott Bridge…

Curzon Bridge

Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, Deepcut…and ends at Curzon Bridge, a modern bridge that sits over a lock.

Wildlife

Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, DeepcutWildlife is everywhere along this stretch of canal and on our mini-beast safari we found butterflies, caterpillars, spiders and ladybirds.

Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, DeepcutIn the canal we saw newts, freshwater snails and lots of fish, including a large one that looked like a pike.

There were plenty of ducks and coots too.

Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, DeepcutWe even found a coot egg shell (we think) and the cast skin from a nymph of some description

The Walk and Paths

Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, DeepcutThis walk is Sections 4 and 5 of the canal together, which is a walk from Pirbright to Deepcut (Section 4) and then from Deepcut to the Basingstoke Canal Visitor Centre (Section 5).

This walk is about 2 miles long and is not circular. Each section took us about 1.5 hours.

Basingstoke Canal Section 04 - From Pirbright Bridge to Curzon Bridge, DeepcutI have used both a normal buggy and an all-terrain buggy on the Basingstoke Canal tow path.

The tow path can be muddy in places so bring wellies if it has been raining.
