13pt;\">The Natural History Museum in London was designed to be a cathedral to nature. It was built to celebrate life on Earth, to be big enough to house even the largest exhibits, and to be free to visit.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">150 years later and it is still living up to that original brief. It is home to a mind-boggling 80 million specimens, including a blue whale, Tyrannosaurus rex and a giant squid. I had a specific mission today &#8211;<\/span><\/span><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">\u00a0to show my children Dippy the Diplodocus skeleton before it leaves on 4th January 2017.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 10pt; color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">The children were amazed by Dippy&#8217;s size. The concept of a skeleton seemed a little abstract for them but they recognised it as being a\u00a0dinosaur. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><em><span style=\"font-size: 10pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">I wrote this in January 2017. I visited during a peak time and the\u00a0museum was so\u00a0busy that\u00a0the children struggled to\u00a0see many of the\u00a0exhibits.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Using a Buggy<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt; color: #000000;\">I brought a buggy but it was difficult &#8211; many\u00a0walkways were narrow, the lift in the blue whale room was not in use and manoeuvring was hard because the rooms were so full of\u00a0people. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt; color: #000000;\">Next time I will leave all our stuff in the cloakroom.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 14pt; color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif;\">Useful to Know<\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">1. The museum can be\u00a0really\u00a0busy. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt; color: #000000;\">Google suggests that the museum&#8217;s busiest times are school holidays, weekends and Fridays from about 12 noon until about 4pm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt;\">2. Entry queues can build up. <\/span><\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt; color: #000000;\">When we drove past at 10am the museum had just opened and there was an enormous queue but by\u00a010.50am it was down to about five minutes. When we left the museum\u00a0at 1pm there was no queue at all but when we\u00a0drove past at 2pm an enormous queue had built up again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>3.<\/strong> <strong>Step-Free Access<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt; color: #000000;\">The front entrance (Cromwell Road) into the Museum has steps but no ramp. The\u00a0Exhibition Road entrance has step free access.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt; color: #000000;\"><strong>4.<\/strong> <strong>The Cloakroom<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><span style=\"font-family: verdana, geneva, sans-serif; font-size: 13pt; color: #000000;\">Children under 3 can leave items in the\u00a0cloakroom for free.
