The Trails

Various trails criss-cross Alice Holt Forest. Some are easy access, others are wilder.  Some are flat, others have steep hills. They are all marked and there are free maps available.

Story Book Trails

Alice Holt Forest is one of the venues that hosts story book activity trails based on the books of Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler. 

Trails have included The Gruffalo, The Gruffalo’s Child, The Highway Rat and Zog.  At the time of writing, there is a Superworm Trail.  

You buy a map bursting with activities to try along the trail – drawings to colour, puzzles to ponder and woodland things to spot.  

Along the way you also come face to face with characters from the stories, including the Gruffalo, Stick Man and the Gruffalo’s child.

The Timberline Play Trail

The 1km long Habitat Trail leads you past both adventure play areas 

and also hides huge play sculptures.

The Adventure Play Areas

Alice Holt has two adventure play areas.

Playwood Adventure Play Area is next to the cafe and has large wooden climbing frames, slides and swings.

Timberline Adventure Play Area is a five minute walk from Playwood and is a huge, circular obstacle course with wooden climbing frames, slides, bridges and nets. 

Other Activities

Alice Holt also has an Activity Centre and Shop that offers cycle hire 

table tennis 

volleyball 

and badminton.

There is also orienteering 

Go Ape 

and lots of picnic spots to try.

The Cafe 

This is located next to the main entrance and Visitor Centre.  You can its picnic tables to eat food you have bought there or brought from home.

Wellesley Woodlands

Wellesley Woodlands is a network of woodland 

and pathways in and around Aldershot 

and along the beautiful Basingstoke Canal.  

Activity Trails

There are lots of activity trails to try in the What To Do section of their website,

including brass rubbing, orienteering and Go Wild challenges.  

The Brass Rubbing Trail

This took us about an hour to walk around. It was an easy walk on mostly flat paths. 

The brass rubbing trail map is available on the Wellesley Woodlands website and has spaces for each of the brass rubbing posts.

Rushmere Country Park

Rushmere CP is somewhere to head out into nature and explore.  

It is covered with sculptures, play spaces

trees and dens 

and is criss-crossed with footpaths, 

cycle routes and bridleways.

The Fairy Trail

The fairies hide along the short Access for all footpath, which has smooth, easy to walk along paths. 

We spotted a fairy dinner party

Woodpecker Trail

Following the longer Woodpecker Trail (which is bumpier with a steep hill you go up and down) leads you deeper into the park, 

down a hill

past Stockgrove Lake 

and several play spaces.

The Play Areas

There are seven play spaces scattered across the park.

This includes a play area for younger children (those under the age of 6) and has equipment that includes a playhouse, roundabout, giant snails and a sand pit with a static digger machine. 

Also scattered along the trails are other pieces if play equipment, like a wobbly bridge and balancing stumps. 

Treetops Cafe

Treetops Cafe perches high on the hillside with beautiful views over a lake where herons breed.

Along the viewing balcony are tables and also binoculars you can use to look at the herons and their nests. 

The Leighton-Linslade Children’s Trail

We visited Rushmere Country Park after trying the Leighton-Linslade Children’s Trail.

Can You Help?

Luckily, you can help to track down each of these escapees. Pick up a trail map identifying where each is hidden and follow it until you see a blue footprint on the floor. Look around until you spot something out of the ordinary.

Look Everywhere

It could be anything…you never know what is just around the corner in this town – a magical shadow or hidden animal, secret writing or an overt phrase, a tiny mouse or a huge pencil, a high up cat or a low down rat!

The Challenge…and Reward

When you have found it, fill in the clue on the back of your map. Once the map challenges are complete (or not!), take your map to the White House on Hockliffe Street to pick up your reward. We were given a badge, bookmark and an art card.

Leighton-Linslade

We spent a magical morning following the trail past old buildings, up winding mews and along busy streets.

It leads you to parts of the town you would never have realised were there. 

The Play Area and Splash Pad

You arrive at Parson’s Close Recreation Ground towards the end of the trail. 

It is a park with a large playground, a superb splash pad with jets of water and a huge sand pit. We played for hours.

Which Story?

Essentially, this is an art work or sculpture trail with pieces inspired by books like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Harry Potter, The Borrowers, Alice in Wonderland and The Gruffalo.

Some of the art works are easy to connect to a particular character or story and others tie more generally into themes commonly found in children’s books – for example, doors to other worlds, making wishes and magical items.

Maps and a pencil are available for free from Leighton Buzzard Library or The White House (on Hockliffe Street).

There is One Teeny Tiny Street!

Access was easy but one of the streets the trail leads you down is called Peacock Mews. This is a charming, tiny street with a narrow alleyway. My double buggy managed to squeak through. 

If you do get stuck, you can go around onto Hockliffe Street and into Peacock Mews that way.

Magical Fun

We have visited the trail twice now. On both occasions we have had a fantastically magical day.

Everyone was so friendly – it is no exaggeration to say that in February we were invited to two events, given several hints, and were spoken to at least another 10 times.

Rushmere Country Park

The Sentinels

The Sentinels are wooden sculptures and there are a few along each of the marked trails. Their locations are shown on the maps by the car park, which you can photo before you set off.

The Trails

There are a few marked trails to try that lead you past different features, including gates, activity boards and the Sentinels. 

The paths are sandy and lower than the surrounding trees. There are lots of little hills for you to run up and explore in parallel to the paths.

The Cafe

Cafe Hogmoor is next to the play area and the car park and sells snacks and refreshments. 

The Bee Hive

Between the Hogmoor Cafe and the car park is a little building called the Bee Hive. Next to it are:

• musical instruments 
• a scavenger hunt
• a brass rubbing area. 

The Hogmoor Inclosure Play Area

The Hogmoor Inclosure Natural Play Area has a mixture of natural play equipment and adventure play equipment that includes:

• a large tube slide with a covered rope bridge and long ladders that are broken into sections by wooden platforms
• a wooden climbing frame with nets
• tree stump obstacle courses
• stones to climb on
• a sandy area with sand play equipment 
• a wide slide with a ladder 
• a spinning disc 
• spinning cups 
• three tyre swings 
• a small castle tower with a ladder 
• a swinging basket 
• swings
• a zip wire.

We could not find any toddler swings.

In the play area there is also a little pond that children paddle in.

Moors Valley Country Park Play Trail

The Play Trail is a route that guides you through the woods to 9 hidden play areas and the Tree Top Trail.

You can explore a Giant Wood Ants’ Nest

wander the Enchanted Woods

make music at the House of Baba Yaga

crawl through the Snake Pit

brave the Bewlidernest

fly through the Hawk House

soar along the Tree Top Trail

sneak past the Spiders

pick your way through the infested waters of Crocodile Crossing

and scramble up Timber.

The Paths

The Play Trail is about a mile long and took us about 2 hours to complete with a lot of stopping and playing. 

The paths are clearly marked and I did not have any problems pushing an all-terrain buggy.

The Miniature Railway

The Moors Valley Railway rumbles through the park (with seasonal opening hours). This is a miniature railway that connects Lakeside and Kingsmere stations.

Everything Else!

There are other marked trails to try – fitness trails, walking trails, cycling trails, audio trails and even a Hawk Walk, which is a walk through the forest with free flying hawks (this needs to be booked in advance)!

Also on offer is Go Ape Tree Top and Segway Adventures,

an orienteering course, a golf course with Footgolf and a family activity area with pitch and putt and equipment hire. 

Where to Eat?

There is a cafe and two picnic areas – one next to the lake and railway and another between the Visitor Centre and the forest.

The latter has life-size sculptures of the Gruffalo and the Gruffalo’s child.

The Moors Valley Play Areas

The fantastic play areas are divided into the Adventure Area, for older children, and the Castle and Sandworks area, for younger children.

The Adventure Area

The Adventure Area has:

• a large slide with a climbing wall
• a climbing wall
• a climbing boulder
• a zip wire
• a basket swing
• a large rope climbing frame
• a huge wooden fortress with a long tube slide, tunnels and rope bridges
• rope swings.

The Castle and Sandworks

• a large multi-play shaped like a house with a slide, fireman’s pole, climbing wall and ropes to climb on
• toddler swings made of ropes
• a wooden train

• sand construction areas with buckets, chutes and pulleys.

The Adventure of Winnall Moors 

“The Adventure of Winnall Moors” leads you along a story trail through the beautiful Winnall Moors Nature Reserve. Your quest begins with a search for the Roadway, which is invisible unless you know the secret password…

Along the way you’ll meet a cast of characters, including Samuel Slipper, the Toad Emperor, Super Slug, and eventually, King Fisher himself.

The Story Trail

This is essentially a walking route that leads you around the nature reserve with a story to read along the way. 

It stops you at various points to notice or do something – for example, spot a sculpture, make a wand, 

find a stone or solve a clue.

Winnall Moors Nature Reserve

Winnall Moors is nature reserve near the centre of Winchester that is home to lots of wildlife, including otters, water voles, and kingfishers. It also has a reedbed boardwalk, wildflower meadows, and the River Itchen.

Winnall Moors

Winnall Moors is a nature reserve in the centre of Winchester. 

With bridges, a boardwalk and the glorious River Itchen, it is one not to be missed. 

The Water Vole Trail

A fun way to reach Winnall Moors is to follow the Water Vole Trail from Winchester town centre, along the River Itchen, and to the gates of the nature reserve. 

The trail is marked by little metal markers on the floor 

and information boards. 

As you follow the trail, keep an eye out for water voles or listen out for the ‘plop’ they make as they drop into the water.

The Water Vole trail is 500 metres long and took us about 20 minutes at a child’s pace. For further details, please visit the Water Vole Trail website.

The Statues

There are a number of statues in the water-meadows, including twelve juror chairs 

that each commemorate key moments in the fight for freedom, 

a memorial to the founding principles of democracy 

that has principles from Magna Carta reflected in the water, 

a memorial to JFK 

and a memorial to the sealing of Magna Carta. 

The Paths

The path along the River Thames is beautiful but bumpy and uneven in places and can be muddy.

To reach the memorials you have to cross a meadow. 

There are steps up to the JFK Memorial and the view point.

Runnymede Pleasure Grounds

Runnymede Pleasure Grounds is on the banks of the River Thames, next to the Runnymede memorials.

It has a play area,

a splash pad, amusements,

boat trips and a cafe.

Tout Quarries

This area was once a Portland stone quarry that has now been turned into an open-air sculpture park and workshop with spectacular views across Chesil Beach and Portland Harbour. 

And if you are really lucky, you may even see a sculptor at work! 

The Sculptures 

There are over 60 sculptures around the quarry. Some are enormous and others are much smaller and harder to spot.

There is a map of the sculptures on the information board in the car park. 

We took a photo of it and used it to play Find the Sculpture. 

Quarry Remnants

Tout Quarry was worked as a limestone quarry from about the 1750s to the 1980s. You can look for signs of these quarry workings as you walk around. There are: 

old tramways

tunnel entrances and hidden shelters

dry stone walls and archways.

Boulters Lock 

Boulters Lock is a picturesque place to watch the lock lift and lower boats as they travel the Thames.

Ray Mill Island and the Thames

Ray Mill Island is surrounded by the Thames. When we visited, the river was swollen and flowing very fast. 

This does give a visit an exciting edge but note that there are no barriers along the edge of the river. 

Ray Mill Island can also flood so be sure to check the Ray Mill Island website before you visit to make sure it is open. 

The Wildlife

Ray Mill island is full of wildlife. Ducks, swans, geese, Canada geese and very cute mandarin ducks all roam confidently, as do the squirrels, which are especially brave on this island and can bite!

Animal Enclosures

In a corner of the island there are animal enclosures, which house guinea pigs, parakeets, finches

also lovebirds and other small birds. 

Paths and Sculptures

Scattered around Ray Mill Island are pathways, sculptures, benches and bridges. There is also a series of wooden animals to track down.

Boulters Lock Play Area

There is a small play area for children from 3 to 8 years old, with a wobbly bridge that children can climb and play on. 

Riverside Gardens

About a ten minute walk down the road is Riverside Gardens Play Area, which has a zip wire, sand pit, cafe and mini golf, as well as the usual play equipment. 

Sail the Thames

Next to Riverside Gardens is Maidenhead Promenade, where you can catch a boat to Windsor at certain times of the year. There are also boats to rent nearby and walks up and down the Thames Path.

RHS Wisley Christmas Glow

The gardens were open late and we arrived after dark.

Everywhere was pitch black except for the trails of fairy lights, illuminated trees, glowing reflections and massive flower sculptures.

Huge Lanterns

The lanterns included a huge mistletoe archway,

floating lotus flowers,

clusters of daffodils and flowers that change colour at the click of a button. 

Festive Lighting

Lights pick out plants and garden features and also work their magic inside the Glasshouse.

This is the waterfall!

Darkness

I had been concerned that the children might be scared of the darkness. In fact, they were happy to run around exploring. They particularly liked the flowers that changed colour at the click of a button, over

and over

again.

Busy but Easily Manageable

The gardens were busy but did not feel crowded. The car park was very busy but staff were on hand to guide us to a space.
