There is something magical about finding your own way across a river, and jumping across the River Mole on the famous Box Hill Stepping Stones is no exception.

Once you have finished bouncing across the river, you can either continue along the path to the top of Box Hill or stay down by the river for a paddle and a pond dip. Decisions, decisions!

The Stepping Stones

Follow in the Footsteps of Elizabeth I at Hatfield House https://toddledoddle.com/hatfield-house/ https://toddledoddle.com/hatfield-house/#respond Fri, 07 May 2021 15:35:11 +0000 https://toddledoddle.com/stansted-park-and-miniature-railway-havant-copy/ The Old Palace, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire The Old Palace, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire The Old Palace, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire The Old Palace, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire The Old Palace, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire The Old Palace, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshire

Elizabeth I is one of my favourite historical figures so I was always going to love Hatfield House. This is where Elizabeth grew up, spent periods of house arrest, and found out she had become Queen.

I absolutely loved my visit. If there was an adventure play area, it would be a definite 5/5 for children too.

The Old Palace

The Old Palace, Hatfield House, Hatfield, HertfordshireThe Old Palace was originally called the Royal Palace of Hatfield and was used by Henry VIII as a nursery for his children.

The Old Palace, Hatfield House, Hatfield, HertfordshireThe Royal Palace was originally a quadrangle built around a central courtyard.

The building you see today is one wing of the quadrangle. The courtyard is now a manicured garden.

The rest of the Royal Palace was demolished after Elizabeth I died and the bricks used to build Hatfield House.

Hatfield House

Hatfield House, Hatfield, HertfordshireThis was closed when I visited because of Covid restrictions but I was reliably informed that it has secret doors used by the servants to disappear when necessary!

Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, HertfordshireAs well as the Tudor connection, Hatfield House has rolling parkland, ancient trees,

Hatfield House, Hatfield, Hertfordshireand little robots that mow the lawns!

Elizabeth Oak

Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, HertfordshireThis is said to be the spot where Princess Elizabeth was told she had become Queen in 1558.

The original oak tree she was sitting under died about 100 years ago. Elizabeth II planted this replacement tree in 1985.

The Grounds

Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, HertfordshireThe grounds of Hatfield House roll down to the River Lea and include parkland and woodland to explore. Everywhere you look there are twisted trees that look like they are about to stand up and walk away.

Some areas are busy and others feel isolated. I had a picnic in a spot that was so peaceful a deer walked right past me.

The Trails

Parkland, Hatfield House, Hatfield, HertfordshireThere are a few marked trails to choose from. I tried the Red Walk, which is a little over 3 miles and takes you into the woodland, along the River Lea, past Elizabeth Oak and then back through the parkland.

The paths were easy to walk on, with some hills. Lots of families were using buggies without any trouble.

The Guides

The Old Palace, Hatfield House, Hatfield, HertfordshireI visited in connection with another project and would like to say a huge thank you to Dermot and Alan, two of the guides who made my visit extra special.

They were both very knowledgeable and helpful and went out of their way to explain the history of the Old Palace.

No one believed me when I announced we were going on a mission to discover dinosaur footprints at a place called Spyway. Our mission took us through puddles, past a quarry and into some serious mud, finally ending at dinosaur footprints so enormous we could stand in them.

Priest’s Way

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetThe walk to Keates Quarry and the dinosaur footprints is an easy 3/4 of a mile along paths with sea views.

When you leave the Spyway car park head towards the sea and then turn right onto Priest’s Way in the direction of Worth Matravers.

Keate’s Quarry

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetAlong Priest’s Way you walk past a working quarry that is surrounded by stacks of stone.

This is limestone from the local area, which has been quarried for centuries, building places like Corfe Castle and Westminster Abbey.

“Dinosaur Tracks” This Way

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetA little way after the quarry you come to a gate on the right with a picture of a dinosaur and “Dinosaur tracks” written on it.

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetKeates Quarry is then just a short walk across the field.

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetBe sure to bring wellies!

It was very muddy when we visited and we had to make stepping stones to reach the gate.

Dinosaur Footprints

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetThe fossilised dinosaur tracks are believed to have originally been made by Brachiosauruses walking on a lagoon’s beach.

Brachiosauruses were enormous plant eating dinosaurs that could grow to 30m long. They lived 145 million years ago at a time when Dorset was a tropical area covered in swamps, lagoons and forests.

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetThe footprints are enormous!

We think we spotted baby dinosaur footprints too.

Dancing Ledge and the Cliffs

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetFrom the Spyway car park you can also walk towards the sea and cliffs and then either walk down the coastal paths or just enjoy the beautiful views.

I understand you can also see Dancing Ledge, which is an area of cliff that has been quarried into a flat ledge and has a rock pool that was created for local school children.

Scratched Arse Ware?

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetSadly, we didn’t have time to explore the rest of Spyway and discover what Scratched Arse Ware is or see Dancing Ledge but I will update this post after our next visit.

Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester, DorsetInstead we drove for 20 minutes to Dorchester to see the Dinosaur Museum.

The Paths

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetWhen we visited, the paths ranged from smooth to muddy and bumpy. I used an all terrain buggy and think you might struggle with a normal buggy.

Enjoy Ponies and Paddles at Latchmoor Brook, The New Forest https://toddledoddle.com/latchmoor-brook-fordingbridge-new-forest/ https://toddledoddle.com/latchmoor-brook-fordingbridge-new-forest/#respond Tue, 21 May 2019 07:46:58 +0000 https://toddledoddle.com/thursley-common-and-moat-pond-thursley-copy/

Latchmoor Brook is a shallow stream on the edge of the New Forest where you can picnic, paddle, see ponies and hunt for fossils. You will definitely need your wellies!

Paddling

Latchmoor Brook Fossils, Fordingbridge, New Forest, HampshireLatchmoor Brook is a beautiful place to combine a picnic and a paddle to cool off during the summer.

Latchmoor Brook Fossils, Fordingbridge, New Forest, HampshireDuring the winter or wet months it can be muddy and I understand the mud could be dangerous.

Fossil Hunting

You can find fossils along the stream at any point from the path to the woods. You are most likely to find fossilised shells but, if you are very lucky, you may find fish remains and shark teeth.

Please note that you need permission to collect specimens and are not allowed to dig here.

The Mud

Latchmoor Brook Fossils, Fordingbridge, New Forest, HampshireIt was muddy when we visited and we could not walk far along the brook.

I understand the mud can become dangerous so be sure to only visit during dry times of the year.

To Find Latchmoor Brook

Latchmoor Brook Fossils, Fordingbridge, New Forest, HampshireFollow the path from Telegraph Hill car park that leads to the left. You walk past gorse bushes and go down a slight hill. At the bottom of the hill you come to a boggy area and a small stream, which is Latchmoor Brook.

We crossed the brook and turned right to walk along it. The brook is initially shallow but quickly cuts into the clay, developing steep banks, before disappearing into the forest.
