Our challenge was to find the Source of the Thames. We began at Buscot Lock, walking upstream to the river’s last lock and the statue of Old Father Thames, which used to mark the source.

Some say that on a clear day you can see eight counties from the top of St Martha’s Hill! I am not sure about that but the views are picturesque and we did pick out Leith Hill, Holmbury Hill, Blackdown and Chinthurst Hill.

St Martha’s Hill and Colyers Hanger

Accessible only on foot, St Martha’s Hill has been a place of worship since Norman times and its beautiful views makes it easy to see why.

At the very top is St Martha-on-the-Hill church.

The Paths

The paths to the top of the hill are sandy, steep and uneven in places.

It took us about 20 minutes to reach the top at a child’s pace.

The Other Trails

There are other trails shown on the information board and in the car park, one of which is easy access.

No one believed me when I announced we were going on a mission to discover dinosaur footprints at a place called Spyway. Our mission took us through puddles, past a quarry and into some serious mud, finally ending at dinosaur footprints so enormous we could stand in them.

Priest’s Way

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetThe walk to Keates Quarry and the dinosaur footprints is an easy 3/4 of a mile along paths with sea views.

When you leave the Spyway car park head towards the sea and then turn right onto Priest’s Way in the direction of Worth Matravers.

Keate’s Quarry

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetAlong Priest’s Way you walk past a working quarry that is surrounded by stacks of stone.

This is limestone from the local area, which has been quarried for centuries, building places like Corfe Castle and Westminster Abbey.

“Dinosaur Tracks” This Way

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetA little way after the quarry you come to a gate on the right with a picture of a dinosaur and “Dinosaur tracks” written on it.

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetKeates Quarry is then just a short walk across the field.

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetBe sure to bring wellies!

It was very muddy when we visited and we had to make stepping stones to reach the gate.

Dinosaur Footprints

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetThe fossilised dinosaur tracks are believed to have originally been made by Brachiosauruses walking on a lagoon’s beach.

Brachiosauruses were enormous plant eating dinosaurs that could grow to 30m long. They lived 145 million years ago at a time when Dorset was a tropical area covered in swamps, lagoons and forests.

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetThe footprints are enormous!

We think we spotted baby dinosaur footprints too.

Dancing Ledge and the Cliffs

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetFrom the Spyway car park you can also walk towards the sea and cliffs and then either walk down the coastal paths or just enjoy the beautiful views.

I understand you can also see Dancing Ledge, which is an area of cliff that has been quarried into a flat ledge and has a rock pool that was created for local school children.

Scratched Arse Ware?

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetSadly, we didn’t have time to explore the rest of Spyway and discover what Scratched Arse Ware is or see Dancing Ledge but I will update this post after our next visit.

Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester, DorsetInstead we drove for 20 minutes to Dorchester to see the Dinosaur Museum.

The Paths

Dinosaur Footprints, Keates Quarry, Spyway, Langton Matravers, Swanage, DorsetWhen we visited, the paths ranged from smooth to muddy and bumpy. I used an all terrain buggy and think you might struggle with a normal buggy.

The Dragon of Butser Hill - The Queen Elizabeth Country Park Story Trail, WaterloovilleThe Queen Elizabeth Country Park Story Trail* is called “The Dragon of Butser Hill“.

The story follows the adventures of a knight, a dragon, a giant and a maiden who lived around Butser Hill in the year 845. Happily, it does not have a traditional fairy tale ending!

Butser Hill National Nature ReserveThe story trail was lots of fun with plenty of laughing, charging, howling and running. The children couldn’t stop scanning the skies for the dragon.

Butser Hill

The Dragon of Butser Hill - The Queen Elizabeth Country Park Story Trail, WaterloovilleThe trail leads you around the top of Butser Hill National Nature Reserve, which is one of the highest points in Hampshire with beautiful views towards the Isle of Wight and the South Downs. It is also an ideal spot for kite flying.

Butser Hill National Nature ReserveReaching the Top

You can either walk up the hill from Queen Elizabeth Country Park or drive up from the A3. We considered walking but the Visitor’s Centre staff advised against taking a buggy.

The Paths

Butser Hill National Nature ReserveIt only took us fifteen minutes to walk to the top at a slow pace. We did not find the hill steep to climb and my toddler walked with me.

The hill is covered in rough, clumpy grass but there were paths mown through it.

I have always loved the idea of finding a secret garden, so you can imagine how excited I was to stumble across a secret orchard on Normandy Common.

And it’s not just the secret orchard that makes Normandy Common exciting, it has a whole series of mini-adventures all within easy reach of Normandy Common Play Area.

Will you try street snooker or table tennis? Will you make a den in the woods or splash in the stream? Will you lead an expedition in search of the secret orchard or the wispy woods? The choice is yours!

Normandy Common

Normandy Common and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyNormandy Common is a wooded area with an orchid meadow, pond, orchard, woods, various sports areas, and a small adventure play area.

Normandy Common and Adventure Play Area in Normandy Near Guildford, SurreyThere is a map in each of the car parks that shows you where everything is. The three main areas we visit are below but there are other little areas you can discover for yourself!

The Stream and Pond

Normandy Common and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyThe stream flows through the play area next to the car park on the main road. It can flow quite quickly in wet weather and sometimes there are ducks on it.

Normandy Common Pond Normandy Near Guildford, SurreyThe pond is in the woods at the end of the stream on the other side of the road.

Normandy Common Pond and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyTo find the pond, cross Hunts Hill Road (the road the car parks are on). There is a footpath and bridge immediately on your left, which takes you into the woods and then onto Normandy Pond.

The Wispy Woods

Normandy Common and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyWe call the wooded area between the cricket pitch and the orchard the Wispy Woods because some of its enormous and feathery fir trees.

It’s a smallish patch of mature woodland with a wild feel. I find it an ideal place to let the children run around and explore.

The Secret Orchard

Normandy Common Orchard and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyThis is a Traditional Orchard, a conservation area that is being preserved as a habitat for plants and animals. It is planted in grassland and managed in an organic way.

The boards say, “All wildlife and visitors can enjoy a variety of true and traditional fruit flavours.”

Normandy Common Orchard and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyWe visited in September and found pear, apple, plum, and cherry trees.

We also saw a mulberry bush, which I knew from the nursery rhyme but had never actually seen.

Finding the Woods and Orchard

Normandy Common and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyLeave the play area and walk over the football pitch towards the red bin. Walk over the bridge and onto the cricket ground until you reach the cricket building.

Normandy Common and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyWalk across the car park to the woods and take the footpath marked as a Permissive Horse Ride.

Normandy Common and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyFollow this path until you come to the entrance to the Wispy Woods on the left.

Normandy Common Orchard and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyTo reach the orchard, keep following this path beyond the woods, ignoring any side paths.

There is a large bend to the right and then a smaller bend to the left and the orchard is up a slight hill and on the right. It is about a five minute walk from the Wispy Woods.

The orchard and woods are clearly marked on the car park maps. If it is your first visit, then consider taking a photo of the map with you.

Of all the places I have explored, Shoulder of Mutton Hill is my favourite – it’s also the place I visit most often. I love the climb, I love the views and I love the surrounding Ashford Hangers.

Finding Shoulder of Mutton Hill

There are different ways to reach Shoulder of Mutton Hill and the top of the Ashford Hangers but these are the three routes I use, all of which involve climbs:

From Lutcombe Pond:

Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, Near Petersfield, HampshireFrom the car park at GU32 1AB, follow the path that runs along Ashford Stream, keeping Lutcombe Pond on your right.

Keep walking straight up the hill and when you are nearly at the top,  you come to these steps.

From Lutcombe Pond Using the Little Bridge:

Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, Near Petersfield, HampshireFrom the car park at GU32 1AB, follow the path that runs along Ashford Stream, but this time cross the little bridge and keep Lutcombe Pond on your left.

From Ashford Farm:

Climbing the Zig-Zag path to Selbourne Common feels like ascending to a magical woodland world, hidden away in the treetops from everyone but you.

Selbourne Common

Selbourne Common and the Zig Zag Path in Selbourne, Hampshire - National TrustSelbourne Common is covered in towering trees, wildflower meadows and a hidden pond.

Selbourne Common and the Zig Zag Path in Selbourne, Hampshire - National TrustAs you walk around, an occasional gap in the trees reveals a beautiful view across the Hampshire Downs, as if to remind you how high up you are.

Selbourne Common National Trust, Selbourne, HampshireThe Common was peaceful and relaxing. The silence was only broken by the rustling of leaves as squirrels and birds foraged.

The Zig-Zag Path

Selbourne Common National Trust, Selbourne, HampshireThis path was cut by the naturalist Gilbert White and his brother in 1753 to make accessing Selbourne Common easier.

Selbourne Common National Trust, Selbourne, HampshireYou can just about make out the lines of the path in the middle of this photo as they zig-zag their way up the hill.

The Selbourne Hanger

Selbourne Common National Trust, Selbourne, Hampshire

The Zig-Zag path is on the steepest side of the hill, called the Selbourne Hanger. It is covered in precariously balanced trees.

Selbourne Common National Trust, Selbourne, HampshireThe ascent is fairly gradual and not a challenging climb. We climbed for about ten minutes, at an adult’s pace, before reaching the top.

This could be a tricky climb for a child.

The Views

Selbourne Common National Trust, Selbourne, Hampshire

The path seems never-ending but the higher you climb, the more rewarding the view.

Selbourne Common National Trust, Selbourne, HampshireBy the time you reach the top, the views are breathtaking and the well placed bench is the perfect place to relax and enjoy them.

Go Wild

There are plenty of plants and animals for children to discover – stag beetles, butterflies, dragonflies and other insects as well as birds, orchids and fungi.
