At Headley Heath you can follow undulating trails through heathland, woodland and chalk hillside, passing ponds, view points and WW2 remnants.

The Pink Photos

Headley Heath, Leatherhead, SurreyIf you think the photos look a little pink and dark then you’re right.

We visited on an eerie day when a storm carried sand over from the Sahara and turned the sun pink!

The Lizard Trail

Headley Heath, Leatherhead, SurreyWe followed the Lizard Trail, which is about 2 miles and marked along the way by orange posts.

It starts at the main car park and is aimed at families.

The Paths

Headley Heath, Leatherhead, SurreySome parts of the paths were surfaced and others were made of loose stones, grass, earth or sand.

Headley Heath, Leatherhead, SurreyIt was hard work in a few places – there were hills and tree roots to contend with but we had no problems with an all-terrain buggy.

Den Building

Headley Heath, Leatherhead, SurreyThere are lots of spots to head off the path and build a den.

World War 2

Headley Heath, Leatherhead, SurreyHeadley Heath was used during World War 2 in two ways. The Canadian army had a headquarters here.

They created many of the paths that still crisscross the heath and stored ammunition at The Pyramids (the area you come to at marker 6 on the Lizard Trail).

The heath was also used to support the Czech resistance.

Bordon Inclosure, Bordon, Surrey

Hidden behind this unassuming exterior lies a woodland wonderland perfect for going wild and having an adventure.

With something to explore around every corner, what will you discover?

Brass Rubbing Trails

Bordon Inclosure, Bordon, Surrey

Brass rubbing trails of varying lengths snake through the woods. Each is marked by arrows and posts topped with a numbered brass rubbing plate.

Be sure to bring pencils or crayons and some paper!

Sculptures

Bordon Inclosure, Bordon, Surrey

I love stumbling across sculptures in the wild and we found two hidden at Bordon Inclosure – some hunters with spears and a large toad!

The Natural Play Area

Bordon Inclosure, Bordon, Surrey

The natural play area has mud hills to climb up and a balance trail made of logs and tree stumps.

The King Oak

Bordon Inclosure, Bordon, Surrey

Near the natural play area we discovered a fairy tale glade where a 400 year-old oak tree seems to spring from nowhere. This is the King Oak, with sprawling branches and a wonderfully twisted trunk.

The Heart of Oak Throne

Bordon Inclosure, Bordon, Surrey

Underneath the Kings Oak is the Heart of Oak throne, which makes the perfect spot to tell the children a fairy tale or, if they’re feeling brave, a spooky story.

The River Wey

Bordon Inclosure, Bordon, Surrey

The River Wey runs through the Inclosure, closely followed by a boardwalk.

Bordon Inclosure, Bordon, SurreyAs we wandered along the bank of the River Wey, we heard a rushing noise that sounded like a waterfall.

Disappointingly, it turned out to be water gushing through an overhead pipe and out on the other side.

Deadwater Valley Nature Reserve

Deadwater Valley Nature Reserve, Bordon

A pathway connects the Bordon Inclosure with the Deadwater Valley Nature Reserve, another beautiful stretch of woodland on the River Wey.

Have a look at this map of the Bordon Inclosure and Deadwater Valley Local Nature Reserve to see how these areas fit together.

Special Events

Bordon Inclosure, Bordon, Surrey

The Bordon Inclosure is managed by the Deadwater Valley Trust and they run special events, some of which are aimed at children.

Our visit coincided with their Halloween event. The rangers were in Halloween costumes and had set up a stand playing Halloween music and selling hot chocolate. A trail of pumpkins lead from the stand to the natural play area, with Halloween themed games and activities. The rangers had clearly gone to a lot of effort and we had a fantastic time.

Please see the Deadwater Valley Trust website for details of forthcoming events.
