Today I found out that the Dragonfly Trail along the Thursley Common boardwalk has been rebuilt and is open!

There is something primeval about Thursley Common. With carnivorous plants, peat bogs and dragons (lizards or dragonflies – take your pick!), it is a breathtaking National Nature Reserve with a wonderful, fresh atmosphere and a range of habitats, including areas of peat bogs, heathland, woodland, and ponds.

The Fire

At the end of May 2020, a fire tore through the boardwalk area. Lots of trees and vegetation were lost and so was the boardwalk, with its Dragonfly Trail.

Thursley Common and Moat Pond, Thursley, SurreyThis is a picture of Moat Pond before the fire.

Thursley Common and Moat Pond, Thursley, SurreyThis is roughly the same area after the fire.

Moat Pond

Thursley Common and Moat Pond, Thursley, SurreyWe start our visit at Moat Pond, which is almost always smelling of pine and covered in ducks.

In the autumn it is surrounded by fungus – we spotted 50 different types last autumn! (I’m sure it goes without saying but we never touch fungus, we just look at it).

The Dragonfly Trail

Thursley Common and Moat Pond, Thursley, SurreyThis leads you along the boardwalk and over the peat bogs.

The Trails

Thursley Common and Moat Pond, Thursley, SurreyWhen we want a short visit we walk around Moat Pond and watch the wildlife from one of the many little beach-like areas.

If we are after a longer walk, we venture along one of the marked trails.

The Wildlife

Thursley Common and Moat Pond, Thursley, SurreyThursley Common teems with nature and you can almost always see something wonderful.

Thursley Common and Moat Pond, Thursley, SurreyFrom spring to autumn, you can see animals on every visit, including animals such as dragonflies, lizards, caterpillars, birds, and spiders.

On one visit there were thousands of tiny toads hopping across the paths in every direction.

The Lizards

Thursley Common and Moat Pond, Thursley, SurreyThe lizards are easiest to see when warming themselves on the boardwalk during sunny days.

Thor’s Den

Thor's Den - Thursley PlaygroundThere is nearby a play area called Thor’s Den on the edge of Thursley Common.

You can walk there from Moat Pond but it is quite far so you may prefer to drive (GU8 6QD).

Hunt for a Stone Age Quarry in Shere Woodlands https://toddledoddle.com/combe-bottom-shere-woodlands/ https://toddledoddle.com/combe-bottom-shere-woodlands/#respond Tue, 13 Feb 2024 19:04:22 +0000 https://toddledoddle.com/west-hanger-shere-woodlands-copy/ West Hanger in Shere Woodlands in Shere, Near Guildford, Surrey Hills West Hanger in Shere Woodlands in Shere, Near Guildford, Surrey Hills

A Stone Age quarry hides in the deepest parts of Shere Woodlands. Tracking it down is one of the wildest and most exciting trips I have been on since starting this site and one of those rare occasions where I actually began to feel like an explorer…

Warning: Steep and Uneven Paths!

but it is not an easy walk and involves steep hills, so this walk isn’t for everyone and should not be chosen without careful thought.

The Walk to Combe Bottom

Trying to locate the quarry myself was the really exciting part, and actually took me two visits.

But for anyone without the luxury of time, here are the directions.

From West Hanger Car Park there are two ways to walk down the hill to Combe Bottom but be warned, the hill is very steep – it’s not called West Hanger for nothing…

Route 1:  Along the Road

Walk out of the car park to the road. Turn right onto Staple Lane and then right again onto Combe Lane.

Follow Combe Lane down the hill, around a sharp bend to the right and you will come to this sign on the left.

West Hanger in Shere Woodlands in Shere, Near Guildford, Surrey HillsPlease be careful – there is no pavement and cars and cyclist use the road too.

Route 2:  Straight Down West Hanger

Leave the car park by the path on the left and walk into the woods.

After a short walk through the woods, you meet a trail running to your right.

Be careful – the trail is very steep and uneven

and the path may be used by mountain bikers.

Near the bottom of the hill you will see the road.

West Hanger in Shere Woodlands in Shere, Near Guildford, Surrey HillsThis is Combe Lane and it runs along the bottom of the hill.

Cross the road and walk a short way to the left, until you see the Combe Bottom sign on your right.

Again, please be careful – there is no pavement and cars and cyclist use the road too.

Finding the Holloway

From the Combe Bottom sign, follow the wild path for five to ten minutes, under trees,

Combe Bottom in Shere Woodlands in Shere, Near Guildford, Surrey Hillsthrough brambles patches

and into a holloway.

If it isn’t too overgrown, you might be able to spot the pillbox on your right.

The route to the quarry is near the end of the holloway, up the steep bank on your left.

Combe Bottom in Shere Woodlands in Shere, Near Guildford, Surrey HillsIf you reach this sign and the end of the holloway, you have gone too far.

To the Quarry!

You should now be standing on top of the steep bank with the holloway behind you.

You will notice a second holloway in front of you, which seems to run parallel to the first.

Believe it or not, this is the path to the quarry!

Combe Bottom in Shere Woodlands in Shere, Near Guildford, Surrey HillsFollow this to the left until you come to a fallen tree blocking the way.

This is the entrance to the lowest part of the quarry.

A Neolithic Quarry

The only information I can find about this quarry is that it dates back to the Stone Age, or Neolithic period, and was used to quarry flint.

Today it is a huge, bowl-shaped hole in the hillside with steep sides.

Flint Tools

As you walk back up to West Hanger car park, and pause for the odd rest or two, keep an eye out for flints lying around or amongst the roots of trees.

You may spot a flint tool!

Have a look at the Wessex Archaeology website for details of the types of flint to look out for.

Combe Bottom

West Hanger in Shere Woodlands in Shere, Near Guildford, Surrey HillsCombe Bottom is part of the enchanting Shere Woodlands and sits at the bottom of West Hanger hill.

There is not much to see unless you would like to find the quarry.

There is something magical about West Hanger in Shere Woodlands. Maybe it’s the paths that twist past old, gnarled trees, secret hideouts and quiet copses. Maybe it’s the Stone Age flint quarry and WWII remnants. Maybe it’s the shady peace and quiet and the gorgeous views. Whatever it is, prepare to be enchanted!

Finding Shoulder of Mutton Hill

There are different ways to reach Shoulder of Mutton Hill and the top of the Ashford Hangers but these are the three routes I use, all of which involve climbs:

From Lutcombe Pond:

Keep walking straight up the hill and when you are nearly at the top,  you come to these steps.

Cobbett’s View

William Cobbett. Stipple engraving by F. Bartolozzi, 1801, after J. R. Smith. Wellcome Collection. Public Domain Mark. Source: Wellcome Collection. https://wellcomecollection.org/works/dm2auttn

William Cobbett (1763-1835) was many things – radical, journalist, farmer, MP, political and social reformer.

Starting in 1822, he went on a series of journeys to see for himself the conditions of rural life. He recorded his findings, which became the book Rural Rides.

Wheatham Hill in the Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, PetersfieldOn 24 November 1822, Cobbett arrived at the Ashford Hangers and describes his adventure through the hangers to Wheatham Hill, which is now known As Cobbett’s View.

To the Top!

Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, Near Petersfield, HampshireI will let William Cobbett explain about the spectacular joys of walking to the top of Wheatham Hill!

Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, Near Petersfield, Hampshire“On we trotted up this pretty green lane; and indeed, we had been coming gently and generally up hill for a good while.

Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, Near Petersfield, Hampshire“The lane was between highish banks and pretty high stuff growing on the banks, so that we could see no distance from us,

Wheatham Hill in the Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, Petersfield“and could receive not the smallest hint of what was so near at hand.

Wheatham Hill in the Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, Petersfield“The lane had a little turn towards the end; so that, out we came, all in a moment, at the very edge of the hanger! And never, in all my life, was I so surprised and so delighted!

Wheatham Hill, Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, Near Petersfield, Hampshire“I pulled up my horse, and sat and looked; and it was like looking from the top of a castle down into the sea, except that the valley was land and not water.

Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, Near Petersfield, Hampshire“I looked at my servant, to see what effect this unexpected sight had upon him. His surprise was as great as mine, though he had been bred amongst the North Hampshire hills. Those who had so strenuously dwelt on the dirt and dangers of this route, had said not a word about beauties, the matchless beauties of the scenery.

Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, Near Petersfield, Hampshire“These hangers are woods on the sides of very steep hills. The trees and underwood hang, in some sort, to the ground, instead of standing on it. Hence these places are called Hangers.”

Rural Rides by William Corbett, Wheatham Hill in the Ashford Hangers National Nature Reserve, Steep, PetersfieldThe above description of Cobbett’s adventure in the Ashford Hangers starts on page 127 of Rural Rides. You can find a free online copy on the Project Gutenberg website

Each year, Longleat’s magical Festival of Light uses huge lanterns to create worlds from children’s stories.

We have walked through the wardrobe into Narnia, explored the wonderful worlds of Roald Dahl, come face to face with mythical monsters and marvelled at characters from Grimms’ Fairy Tales.

The Festival of Light

Festival of Light at Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireThe Festival of light happens over the Christmas period and is one of our favourite festive adventures.

You can either buy tickets for the whole park or just to see the lights.

Longleat is fantastic – one of the best days out I’ve had with children. We had an action-packed day full of fun, adventure and wonder, during which we hand-fed beautiful animals, safaried by land and water and conquered an adventure castle and splash pad.

Longleat can be divided into two main areas – the Safari and the Main Square.

The Safari

Longleat Safari ParkThis has an African Village to explore on foot and a Safari Drive-Through to explore from a vehicle – either your own or the Longleat bus.

Safari By Car – The Drive-Through

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireThe Drive-Through has a commentary app, which is a fab idea that turns your drive into a live action, Kate Humble guided documentary.

Monkeys

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireThe monkeys maraud along the lines of cars. We have seen them take cars apart.

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireYou can choose to skip this enclosure if you like.

Big Game Park

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireThis has animals including Anne the elephant

The Carnivores

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireWhen we visited the big carnivore enclosures – tigers, lions, cheetahs and wolves – the tension from the back seat was palpable.

The Main Square

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireThe second part of Longleat is the Main Square, which has the house, cafes and refreshments and more animals.

The Bat Cave

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireThis is a bat roost and the bats fly freely around your head.

Jungle Cruise

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireOn the Jungle Cruise, you take a large boat that wouldn’t have been out of place in The African Queen – a sort of jungle steamer.

We sailed past gorillas, colobus monkeys, lots of birds

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, Wiltshireand two hippos, who were being used as an island by some cheeky ducks.

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireBut our favourite part of the cruise is feeding the sea lions.

They splash around the boat and make a lot of noise, jumping up out of the water to catch the fish you throw them (which you must buy).

Animal Adventure

Longleat Safari Park and Adventure Gardens, Warminster, WiltshireThis is home to animals like meerkats, anteaters and porcupines

The perfect end to an adventure-filled day.

Normandy Common

Normandy Common and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyNormandy Common is a wooded area with an orchid meadow, pond, orchard, woods, various sports areas, and a small adventure play area.

Normandy Common and Adventure Play Area in Normandy Near Guildford, SurreyThere is a map in each of the car parks that shows you where everything is. The three main areas we visit are below but there are other little areas you can discover for yourself!

The Stream and Pond

Normandy Common and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyThe stream flows through the play area next to the car park on the main road. It can flow quite quickly in wet weather. Sometimes there are ducks on it.

Normandy Common Pond Normandy Near Guildford, SurreyThe pond is at the end of the stream in the woods on the other side of the road.

The Wispy Woods

Normandy Common and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyWe call the wooded area between the cricket pitch and the orchard the Wispy Woods because some of the enormous fir trees look feathered.

It’s a smallish patch of mature woodland with a wild feel. I find it an ideal place to let the children run around and explore.

The Secret Orchard

Normandy Common Orchard and Play Area, Near Guildford, SurreyThe is a Traditional Orchard, a conservation area that is being preserved as a habitat for plants and animals. It is planted in grassland and managed in an organic way.
